This is correct. K-P is all about “mobile first” at the moment - that’s where resources are being placed, even though their desktop patient portal is a nightmare. The product is “healthcare”, but they want mobile metrics to add value and save costs although it has nothing to do with healthcare.
Very interesting conversation here. I would add to the overall themes that another way to analyze whether a company is product-led is the degree to which they embrace being customer-centric. Going back to the insurance company example, it certainly doesn’t really matter whether the company’s core business is B2C / consumer products (as was mentioned elsewhere) but rather whether they are employing a human-centric Design Thinking methodology. You may sell services or tangible products, but to my mind “product-led” is interchangeable with “customer obsessed”. Now the org chart may vary, but in a situation like that you are inevitably going to be driven by a Product mindset and a significant seat at the table. . I also resonate with the comment about Sales-led. My company isn’t led by Sales but they are a constant source of “winning” ideas without any data to demonstrate expected ROI or even really clear specs that we have to waste time deflecting from roadmaps…
What about “market led” companies, surely users and customers should be driving a lot of the decisions at the company?
@JesusRojas, from my discussions on this topic, even a “market-led” company can be product-led. A company wouldn’t build anything and everything its users say they need. A good product-led place will take the user suggestions into account, run tests to identify whether the feature actually creates significant value, and prioritize building them based on test results (impact, LOE etc.)
That is an ideal example of market and product focused, taking users’ needs into consideration when creating solutions. Unfortunately, I’ve been at a number of companies where they have a product and try to adapt it or sell it to a specific market with little success. Putting the product before the user.
